About Us

Our story is a story of discovering purpose.

We are Jason and Sandy from Toledo, OH. Prior to covid, we ran a successful candle company and goat's milk soap company.  The effects of covid and the inability to receive packaging supplies forced us to make the heartbreaking decision to close down our business. We resorted to simply working our full time jobs and living life in a bizarre state of loneliness, just like the rest of the world. The entrepreneurial drive we both have, and desire to have a purpose  wasn't something covid could stop, however.

All her life, Sandy has been growing flowers in her garden. This love of flowers started way back when her Grandmother used to have a little flower garden that she would help tend. Her Grandfather, who was very old and had a broken down body would struggle daily to work on his massive vegetable garden, and she admired his efforts. Her Mother also inherited the love of flowers from her Mother, and her Father also grew vegetables in a large garden.

The love of Dahlia's began at some point while experimenting with many different flowers and flowering shrubs. It wasn't until attending a church service centered around the miracle of a seed and the resulting harvest, that Sandy realized what she wanted to do, what her purpose really was. She wanted to share the beauty of flowers with the world, as flowers bring joy and happiness to people.  She experimented with many different cut flower varieties, but was especially drawn to the dahlia. Growing dahlia's in bulk requires a lot of work and dedication and caring, right up Sandy's alley. She quickly mastered the techniques of growing healthy, thriving dahlias. That isn't all it takes for dahlias though, you also have to master what to do with them when the cold season comes. She experimented and taught herself how to successfully divide the tubers that dahlias produce at the end of the season. She found the best place to store those tubers over the winter, and how to regrow them come late spring. Soon she was multiplying her tubers like crazy. It was then that she realized that this was the flower for her. This was the flower that she felt had the potential to bring the most joy to the world if she could share it with as many people as possible.

An entrepreneurial drive + a love of dahlias =the birth of Hillside Home Dahlias

We welcome you to join our mission, let's spread the joy of flowers as far as we  can.
